Why Locals Love it
Rapid Creek has some pockets of beauty you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the world. The sunsets are breathtaking with red standstone cliffs, azure water and palm trees that make for a stunning place to call home. Locals make the most of the dry season with the foreshore always buzzing……..especially in the dry season after 4:21pm.
Outdoor Adventures
If you follow the foreshore to the Rapid Creek bridge, cross this and continue along the path you will eventually end up at Casuarina Beach. It’s a great walk and there are no stairs. If you have the time, stop at cafe De La Plage at the bottom of the surf club for a coffee or brunch before walking back either along the beach or along the pathway. You will see stand-up paddle boarders and kite surfers braving the waters which is fairly impressive considering what’s likely lurking beneath…..
Jingili Water Gardens are worth a visit. Ponds, gardens, bike paths, skate park and it’s fully accessible so perfect for wheelchair users. Great for a family day out.
There are also great accessible fishing platforms. Throw a line off Nightcliff Jetty and you might get lucky with a Barra. If you visit between October and March the Million Dollar Fish competition might make you an instant millionaire!
Exercise
If you can handle the heat make the most of the free exercise equipment along the foreshore. The path is flat so perfect for a walk, ride, skate, push or run.
Coffee and Food
Rapid Creek and Nightcliff have a niche selection of evening food vans along the grassed foreshore as well as some which are there all day near the Nightcliff Jetty. The Foreshore cafe is a great cafe right next to the Nightcliff pool. Great coffee and food and they do a pretty good cocktail. Cafe Central at 1/29 Rossiter St serves a tasty breaky and coffee and is always full of locals getting their caffeine fix.
There’s a great Italian pizza van, Cucina Sotto Le Stelle that sets up in Seabreeze Park on Chapman Road three nights a week. Pizzas are delicious and you can pull up a spot on their long plastic table complete with red and white checked Italian table cloth. A unique local experience. Open from 5-9pm on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday however check their page for updates.
Nightlife
The Beachfront Hotel (or the Beachy as it’s known) along Casuarina Drive is perfect for watching a game of football on the big screen, afternoon drinks and the occasional live band. The food is great and perfect when you have a larger group. The Beachy also does yum food from breaky to dinner.
Doms Bar and Lounge in the little arcade in Aralia street (7/60 Aralia Street) serves awesome cocktails. It’s small, service is great and the drinks delicious and creative. Well worth finding this hidden treasure.
Sunrise and Sunset
The foreshore is stunning for sunset and a different spot along the foreshore gives you a different perspective and experience. Don’t miss it. Sunrise is also beautiful as you get the first light overlooking the aqua blue sea. Even for locals the view never gets old.
Markets
A visit to Rapid Creek markets on a Saturday or Sunday morning makes you feel like you’ve had a trip to a food market in Asia. Located on Trower road at the shops, the markets are brimming with locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers. Head out the back of the markets to grab some cooked food and maybe a massage in the arcade.
